Scrivener - Organizing, Composing and Writing a PhD Thesis

PhD School at the Faculty of Humanities at University of Copenhagen

Registration

The purpose of this course is to help the participants master a software program that is highly useful when writing their PhD Thesis, whether the thesis is written as a monograph or as a series of articles. The aim is to facilitate a creative writing process, get an overview of the manuscript and achieve a significant output.

The course introduces the software Scrivener that extends the features in traditional text editing, combines features from database systems and offers protection from loss of knowledge/text. Specifically, the participants will be trained in using the many features that Scrivener provides for organizing a manuscript and related source: providing an overview of the content, coherence with respect to arguments, comparison and alignment of different parts of the manuscript, alternating between notes, the manuscript and sources, the ability to go back-and-forth in the writing and editorial processes, conversion of the manuscript, etc. However, the course will not train the participants in writing, presenting an argument, etc.

The course is relevant for all PhD-students. At the end of the course, participants will have an individualised manuscript format/database that can be used for the thesis.

Course requirements: Preparation of the course consists of buying and installing the software. Each student must finance the purchase of an individual license to be used, the cost is 30 €. It is not a requirement for the participants to bring their own text or sources to the course, but those who already have written parts of their thesis or gathered information are encouraged to do so.

ECTS: 0.4 for participation and preparation.
