Nvivo for your literature reviews

Nvivo for your literature reviews In-Person

Please note: This is a beginners training course aimed at Windows-users. The sample dataset and discussions are drawn from the health sciences, but researchers and students from all faculties are of course welcome. Generic courses in Nvivo, offered in Danish and English, are also available, read more in the course calendar.

Prior to the course, you must install NVivo on your computer. Download and registration keys are available through the UCPH software Library

We also ask you to complete a set of introductory exercises before course start, that you can read about HERE

In this short course, you will be introduced to the NVivo12 software. NVivo is a programme that can be used in analysis of qualitative survey data, interviews, focus group discussions as well as content analysis of text from many other different resources. Nvivo aids you in  organising and/or “coding” (categorize) your empirical material or literature and visualizing relationships in your data. It can also be helpful when you want to transcribe audio- or video files, generate hypotheses and generally getting an overview of your project.

In this workshop, we focus on Nvivo in literature reviews.

At the end of the course participants will have learned and practised:

  • Setting-up an NVivo project: importing data from reference managers, creating folders, using case nodes and classifications, formatting documents for auto coding, and working with code books and other reports.

  • Using basic analysis features of NVivo: creating parent and child nodes, coding to nodes, reviewing and changing coding, annotations, applying ‘see also links’, memo-ing, performing queries, using coding visualizations to inform your search strategies and using project maps.

NVivo does not analyze qualitative data for the researcher but rather can enhance the researcher’s analytical capacity by providing the means to efficiently store, sort and look for patterns in diverse forms of data. Training in NVivo is not a substitute for qualitative research training.

The teaching is based on the PC version of NVivo, where the program works best. The Mac-version of the programme is not on the same level as the PC version, but you can attend the course with a Mac. Likewise, there can even be small differences in the PC versions of NVivo as NVivo is frequently updated. We’ll take all this in our stride during the workshop

The course requires a minimum of six participants.

Due to Corona, the course will until further notice only be offered online Hopefully, later in the year, we can hold physical workshops again at the library.

You will receive a Zoom link two days before the course.
