The workshop is for students who have little to no prior computational experience. The aim is for you to quickly apply skills learned during the workshop to your own studies. Read more about the Data Carpentry for Beginners workshop on our website.

Data Carpentry gives you the fundamental data skills needed to conduct your analyses with data in sheets. The workshop is developed in collaboration with UCPH's Digital Literacy & Skills initiative. It is important that you as a student have relevant digital skills that you can use both during your studies and when you graduate. In order to ensure this, all students at UCPH will during their Bachelor's degree programme, acquire knowledge of five topics in the field of digitalization. These topics are gathered in the UCPH model for students' digital literacy and competences. This workshop supports the topics “Datamanagement” and “Digital analysis and methodology”.
 

Program

Day 1, 11th of September (Preparing and Cleaning Data)

• File naming and formatting – how to name your files so you can find them again (9:00 - 09:45)
• Tidy Data in sheets – best practices for organising your data (09:50 - 12:15)
• Open Refine to clean and structure data (13:00 - 15:45)

Day 2, 15th of September (Analysis)  

• Excel – clean and organise your data and present your findings as tables and charts (09:00 - 11:15)
• SQL – create a database, tables and different views of your data. Add new data, delete and query your data (11:30 - 15:00)

How to register
We are offering lessons in managing your data on the 11th and the 15th of September. Both days between 9 am to 4 pm.

Register for the lessons you want to take part in. You may find it beneficial to take all lessons, as the skills you learn are transferable and you will really feel your knowledge progressing.

Note: Since we want to order some light refreshments, registration closes on the 5th of September.
