Praksis inden for humaniora har gennem de sidste mange år ændret sig. Et eksempel er, at den kendte praksis med at nærlæse og at skimme nu er ved at blive suppleret med at fjernlæse. Fjernlæse minder lidt om at skimme, men så er det alligevel også noget andet.

Når man fjernlæser, så fjerner man sig væk fra den enkelte side og ser materialet på afstand for at identificere mønstre, temaer, trends og særheder.

Redskaberne til fjernlæsning er foruden en computer og digitale tekster et begrænset antal algoritmer og mange visualiseringer. Nogle af de algoritmer og typer af visualiseringer, som bliver benyttet anvendes også inden for korpus lingvistik. Andre algoritmer og visuelle benyttes inden for statistik og bliver anvendt mange steder i samfundet til at løse alle typer af opgaver, der forudsætter en kategoriseringer og beregninger.

Fjernlæsning har fundet vej ind i humaniora med udbredelsen af digitale data i samfundet og i takt med, at kildemateriale er blevet digitaliset og fjernlæsningsredskaberne begynder at blive indarbejdet på websider til formidling og interaktion med tekstsamlinger.  

Dette kursus er en introduktion til programmet Voyant Tools, der er udviklet til fjernlæsning og visualisering af tekstdata. Voyant Tools er et online program, så du skal ikke installere noget inden kurset. På kurset lærer du at gennem eksempler, hvordan du kan bruge Voyant Tools' visualiseringsredskaber i din praksis.

På kurset vil jeg tage udgangspunkt i mit datasæt bestående af 1800-tals, engelsk rejselitteratur, der omhandler de nordiske lande.

Distant reading in the humanities - Voyant Tools

Practice within the humanities has changed over the past several years. One example is that the well-known practice of close reading and skimming is now being supplemented with distance reading. Distant reading is a bit like skimming, but then it's also something else.

When you read from a distance, you remove yourself from the individual page and view the material from a distance to identify patterns, themes, trends, and distinctive features.

The tools for distant reading are, in addition to a computer and digital texts, a limited number of algorithms and many visualizations. Some of the algorithms and types of visualizations that are used are also used within corpus linguistics.

Other algorithms and visuals are used in statistics and in many places in society to solve all types of tasks that require categorization and calculations

Distant reading has found its way into the humanities with the spread of digital data in society and as source material has been digitized. The distant reading tools are beginning to be incorporated into web pages for dissemination and interaction with text collections.

This course is an introduction to a program called Voyant Tools. It is developed to assist with  distant reading and visualization of text data. Voyant Tools is an online program, so you don't need to install anything before the course. In the course, you will learn through examples how you can use Voyant Tools' visualization tools in your practice.

In the course I use my data set consisting of 19th-century English travel literature dealing with the Nordic countries.
